    great upgrade,i am using vista home premium previously without sp1 my dell used to show 3.5gb even though 4 gb is installed on the system,after upgrade the system is showing 4 gb memory and also frequent instabily issues have been sorted,now after upgrade vista is no slow irritating os now its speedy,stable and more compliant just like our old xp but with eyecandy,areo effects which are original virtues of vista. summing up vista retained its virtues and got rid of the vices with this upgrade. i recommend vista for everyone after this upgrade, dont expect to have plethola of new features with vista sp1 its not released with that intension,its targeted to improve performance and stability of vista and not to increase features or visual effects, as vista comes with good visual effects and features ofcourse features depend on the version you choose

    final words: its a great upgrade improving performance and stability of the os

    I am not a fanboy, and I don't see the point of going to bat for MS or Apple when they won't go to bad for you when their products suck. I use both Mac and PC. I am not a tech-head, just an average user. And I have been supremely disappointed with Vista from day 1. I thought SP1 would fix some of the glitches, but it hasn't. Of particular note:

    1. Start-up time is still excruciatingly slow;
    2. I still occasionally get a BSOD;
    3. Programs are still rather unstable on my OS, especially Firefox and Office (they freeze up a lot, Firefox crashes on me a lot).

    At the end of the day, I'm an average user. So-called "power users" may not have problems, but not everyone is going to be a "power user." I do not find myself using any of the new "features" of Vista. Accordingly, I am still at a loss as to how this product is a quantum leap forward as some people are saying, even with SP1. In my day-to-day usage, it has just caused me more headaches.

    I have a Thinkpad that I cannot use because of the hazard of data loss. In four months, I have had to do a complete system restore 6 times. Every time has been due to instability in Vista. Instability to the point of data loss. Not only that, but the improved video driver update keeps trying to force on me blanks the screen except in safe mode and cannot be removed except by a full system restore. Even stepping back to an earlier point doesn't get rid of it.

    Your review focuses on features and performance. These are minor issues with Vista. It is the most unstable piece of crap since Windows ME and I would really like to know whether Microsoft has addressed those issues. If they haven't, I will downgrade to XP and have done with it. I have no need for an unusable laptop.

    Aside from anything I could say, CNET sums it up best. CNET's final statement in the review is:

    "downloading and installing the update will take some users a few hours without any visible or tangible improvements to their systems."

    ...and somehow this makes the product receive a 7 out of 10? Comeon. No tangible improvements after a year and a half of fixes? How that could even be partially acceptable is beyond belief. CNET needs to lay off the drugs in their reviews because that doesn't even make sense.

    "I am glad there are reviews of Vista SP1 performance but am very surprised by a few items not covered in this article. The graphs should have included XP performance on those same charts."

    WHY? This is designed to be a discussion on Vista performance vs. XP, it is designed to be a comparison between how Vista machines operate with and without the update!

    I have run Vista for over one year, without issue. I am pretty convinced many of the problems and negative reviews come from people trying to upgrade.

    Their preferred method of upgrading being leave their computer as is, apply Vista over the top, then b**** about the results. No cleaning/optimizing beforehand, no uninstalling of any devices/drivers that were known to be incompatible, then acting surprised at how it turned out. Silly in just gets you silly out.

    These same people are the ones complaining about it having no bells and whistles, like ALL Service Packs are supposed to have them just because one of XP's did. The same people who would complain about a delay if Windows held off to try and do a better job of doing it right, yet turn around and complain if they rushed and there were problems.

    From what Ive seen so far, and despite the new security functions, and the service pack, Vista still isn't worth the hassle of either upgrading to or purchasing a new pc with it!

    I can't wait till the gamers get a hold of this thing. Sigh... it's like sprinkling salt on a turd. Cnet's usually pretty "neutral" on Microsoft stuff lately, if they say it's a mixed bag, I'm sure other's are screaming bloody murder. All this has done is guarentee that even more people and businesses will put off purchasing Vista and more people will be begging for a roll back.

    My only concern is that XP's next SP will somehow break my OS and force me to migrate to this hunk of junk.

    After spending 8 hours running chkdsk, the memory scanner and sfc, this POS still won't install. Microsoft has finally created a POS so bloated, so complicated that it can't even install it's own service pack. God, how I wish I could get my money back! What a piece of crap...

    This SP1 is a big package of lame updates that really doesnt fix vista to make it a complete OS
    Vista is the worse OS ever, I recommend staing with XP mar more stable and fast.

    SP1 wiped out a few lingering bugs i was seeing on my laptop...Battery charge last longer now...I was hoping for some new features too...But all in all it fixed some problems and that's what it was really supposed to do...So overall i'm pleased with Vista SP1.
