The good: Built-in iSight camera for videoconferencing and photos; remote control and Front Row software let you enjoy media from across the room; faster and cheaper than past models.

The bad: TV missing from Front Row media application; can't adjust the height of the screen; expandability limited to adding RAM; only 90 days of phone support.

The bottom line: The Apple iMac G5 gets trimmer and cheaper as it ups its performance and adds a handful of multimedia features, resulting in an all-around first-rate home PC.

Product brief - Apple iMac G5 (2.1GHz, 20-inch)
Hide

Description: The Apple iMAC G5 (2.1GHz, 20-inch) is a PowerPC G5-based, value-oriented desktop PC. Compared to other value-oriented PCs on the market, it is midpriced at around $735. This unit also comes with a 20-inch flat panel display that supports 1680 x 1050 resolution. This desktop comes with 512 MB RAM, and a 250GB hard disk.

Pros: Has a DVD? RW(+ R DL) disc drive, which is more preferable than some similarly priced PCs. Also, this PC has a stereo sound output mode, which is more favorable than some similarly priced PCs. By way of comparison, the typical cost of a product with this favorable a sound output mode is $895. The PowerPC G5 based processor installed on this machine is fast enough to handle demanding applications, such as digital video.

Cons: None noted, given available product data.

Suitability: A basic PC, suited for basic computing tasks, such as word processing, e-mail, and web browsing. Also comes with advanced word processing software -- fine for most serious business or academic writers. However, store massive amounts of data on DVD using the DVD burner included in this desktop. You can compile mp3 CDs with this computer’s CD writer.

Value: Overall, this PC has great features for the money. Also, note that the purchase price also includes a 20-inch flat panel display. ( Click here to see current prices and the latest reviews.)

Suggestions: (1) Using this PC's Firewire (1394) port, you can connect to many digital camcorders and other equipment and rapidly upload data to the computer's hard drive. (2) If you plan to be playing the latest 3-D games, you may want to invest in a more powerful video card from NVidia or ATI, which are popular with the gaming community (requires an open AGP or PCIe slot).
