Sure, you could drop $2,500 on a flashy ultraportable or a powerful desktop replacement, but if you just want a portable computer for basic productivity work, those other laptops could be overkill. Mainstream laptops, the portable equivalent to budget desktop computers, give you just enough power for working on e-mail, word processing, or surfing the Web--usually without the extra features or the high-end components that push up prices. Here are some of the latest mainstream laptops we've reviewed.

Review summary The TravelMate 2355LCi has enough power for basic productivity work, and you can't beat its rock-bottom price--but its battery life is well below average. The Tecra A5 offers sufficient performance and a decent array of features for most business users, but you can find less expensive options. We like the HP Special Edition L2000's feature set and Livestrong nobility, but you can get superior speed and battery life from slightly more expensive mainstream notebooks. The Compaq Presario V2000Z's feature set and low base price are appealing, but you can get superior speed and battery life from slightly more expensive mainstream notebooks. Nice design, lots of speed, impressive components: the mainstream TravelMate 8100 has it all, but you'll pay a slight premium for it.
